Software is today getting more complicated. Hundreds of lines of
code become millions of lines. And with increasing complexity come
bugs or software defects that slip into a software programme when
it is written. However, with software and technology used for increasingly
complex and mission critical applications especially in the fields of medicine,
the whole task is also getting easier to test. Many definitions exist
for software testing. But simply put, software testing is the action
of carrying out one or more tests to determine the technical characteristics
of software elements of a system.

According to a study conducted by the National Institute of Standards
and Technology in the United States, bugs and glitches cost the US
economy alone, nearly $60 million annually.

expectations have become higher from clients and at the same time
it is getting more pervasive and ubiquitous. He says companies today
are beginning to view testing as an integral part of development and
delivery. “A few years ago, depth of testing was determined by the
amount of time available at the end. Today, it is planned upfront and
companies have understood that testing is important for product success,”
Ashok explains.
